Movie Monday

Today I'll talk about one of the last movies I saw - Drive. (or, after its street name, Cars and Awkward Silences)

Drive is basically the type of movie your friends tell you is cool because Imdb says it has 7.9 and everyone knows that's a good rating, right? Right. So, naturally, you give it a shot, because you wouldn't want to be left out of the loop. What happens between you pressing Play and the credits is the little, painfully slow je ne sais quoi that made me question the uses of silence in movies.

A basic dialogue, exemplified:
... ... ... ...
Not only was the love story awkward, but the dialogue made sure you felt the weirdness too. I sort of got what they were trying to do, deepening the mysterious man's mystery, playing with subtlety and non-verbal cues and all that, but GOOD GOD WAS IT PAINFUL TO WATCH. If I wanted to see people exchange meaningful, lust-filled looks with blank, empty eyes, I'd have gone back to high school.
The only actual good thing about this was the soundtrack. If you haven't heard Night Call, I urge you to do so now.

BOTTOM LINE:
For something called Drive, it was slower than the ritual mating of snails. Slow it down at half the speed, and you can hear the universe expanding. To be honest, I think they should have called it Park, because that's how I felt while watching it: stranded in a parking lot, out of gas, staring at snails mating.

1/5. Would not recommend.
